The past year has been one of unprecedented challenge for global business, and 2012 is likely to be a pivotal phase in the unfolding financial drama that has wracked Europe and the United States. Businesses in the Asian region have avoided the worst of the credit market turmoil, but in a connected world economy, painful adjustments in one region cause ripples across the rest of the world.

Rarely has the business environment been so daunting. Europe faces a calamitous debt position that threatens the banking system and could even see the break-up of the eurozone. The United States is experiencing a fragile economic recovery, but is wrestling with a mountain of debt, in this presidential election year. China remains a powerhouse economic force, but with so much turmoil on world markets, can it sustain its momentum?
